How to Demo Fiberglass Shower Enclosures

Fiberglass Shower Enclosure

What’s the best method to demo fiberglass shower enclosures?

Today’s quick tutorial shows how to remove these showers in just a few minutes.

But here’s the deal, this project relies heavily on planning and the right tools.

Let’s dive in!

Safely Remove Fiberglass Shower Enclosures

The goal with this project was to remove the one-piece fiberglass shower insert without damaging the rest of the bathroom.

Only the shower needed to be remodeled. And in order to do that, the fiberglass had to be cut into four pieces.

First, the water was turned off to the entire house. This prevented accidental flooding in case a pipe was cut or dislodged.

Second, the glass door was removed along with shower handle, escutcheon, and shower head.

Typically one-piece fiberglass shower inserts are installed before drywall. So removal needed to be planned out in order to maintain the rest of the bathroom walls.

Furthermore, the new shower will use purple drywall and Schluter’s Shower system; thus, the plan involved leaving about 12″ of old drywall just above the old insert. This also allowed stud bays to be inspected for pipes and electrical.

One of the best ways to make clean straight cuts in drywall is with oscillating multi-tools. Fein’s MultiMaster was used in this demo and made drywall cutting a breeze.

Finally, safety gear should be worn during demo, e.g. silica dust respirator, safety glasses, and gloves.

What’s Next

Fein sponsored today’s tutorial and we’ve been working with them for years because they make quality tools.

If you buy a Fein oscillating multi-tool online or at a home store keep the receipt. Send that receipt along with this completed form to Fein and get 5 to 15 extra blades.

This offer is available until August 31st, 2019 and we didn’t want you to miss out.

Cheers,

Jeff Patterson
